The halal guide
Everything you need to shop confidently across UK supermarkets.
What makes food halal?
Halal means "permissible" under Islamic law. For food, that generally requires the absence of pork, alcohol, blood, and animals not slaughtered according to Islamic ritual.
The grey areas
Most confusion in UK supermarkets comes from additives — emulsifiers, glazing agents, and flavourings that may or may not derive from animal fat. That's where our E-number database helps.
